Tourism sector has travelled far since Covid onset

Covid-19 brought the tourism and travel sector globally to a grinding halt for almost two years. Countries and holiday spots with a huge dependence on travellers have borne the brunt of Covid the most. Many countries are cautiously reopening their doors to visitors. But it will be some time before airports, shopping arcades, hotels, restaurants and entertainment shows see business getting back to normal. International arrivals in 2021 were 72% below the pre-pandemic year of 2019, and the industry suffered a loss of almost $4.5 trn, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Economic Impact Report 2020. In many countries, domestic tourism is picking up momentum faster than international tourism due to the relative ease of processes related to testing and vaccination, eagerness of travellers to venture out and the opening up of the skies and rail systems. Amidst the churn that the sector has been experiencing are some interesting trends thrown up by the digital transition. The

Indians lead tourist rush to Thailand as arrivals top 2 million

Indians and Malaysians are leading a tourist rush to Thailand after it relaxed entry rules, with total arrivals topping 2 million since the start of the year and providing a fillip to the Southeast Asian nation’s sluggish economy. Foreign tourist arrivals totaled 2.03 million between Jan. 1 and June 26, deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said in a statement on Monday. Travelers from India, Malaysia, the UK, Singapore and the US topped the list, she said. Thailand’s tourism industry, which was nearly decimated during the pandemic, expects average monthly arrivals to surge to about 1.5 million with the country scrapping a pre-travel registration and mandatory medical insurance from July 1. Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy has rolled back most of the pandemic-era curbs on travel and businesses, and last week lifted a mask mandate while allowing pubs and bars to return to normal operating hours. The measures are part of efforts to shore up an economy which depen

They have no manuals, architectural drawings or modern machines, but a group of craftsmen make gigantic and identical chariots for Lord Jagannath and his two siblings in Puri every year, using only traditional knowledge. During the annual Rath Yatra festival in the pilgrim town, three chariots famed for their majestic structure and brilliant craftsmanship start from the 12th century Jagannath Temple and reach the Gundicha Temple. “The chariots are constructed afresh every year. There is no deviation in their heights, widths and other key parameters for centuries. However, new features are added to the chariots to make them more colourful and attractive,” Asit Mohanty, a researcher in the Jagannath culture, told PTI.The carpenters engaged in chariot construction do not have any formal training. They only have knowledge and techniques that have been trickled down from their forefathers, Mohanty pointed out. The chariots are constructed from over 4,000 pieces of wood by a few families w

European airports under siege: Why airlines are cancelling flights, struggling to load baggage

Severe manpower shortage at European airports, coupled with a post-pandemic vacation boom, has disrupted travel — leading to flights being cancelled, long queues causing passengers to miss flights, and delayed baggage. London’s Heathrow, one of the worst-hit airports, asked airlines operating at two of its terminals to cancel 10% of their flights, according to a recent  Bloomberg  report. THE PROBLEM AT EUROPEAN AIRPORTS The emergence of Covid-19 two years ago hit the aviation industry severely — airlines and airports let workers go to reduce costs as flights were grounded for a prolonged period. Now, with the pandemic slowly receding, people have resumed travelling and airlines have started increasing flights. But the airports failed to hire staff members in line with the growing traffic. This, coupled with several airport and security worker unions in Europe going on a strike for better pay, has led to a severe shortage of labour and disruptions operations. THE AIRPORTS AFFECTED A

Govt asks employees to opt for lowest air fare, book tickets 21-days before travel

The Finance Ministry has asked government employees to opt for ‘cheapest fare available’ on their entitled travel class and book air tickets at least three weeks prior to their date of travel for tours and LTC, as it looks to cut down on unnecessary expenditure. Travellers ticking off their bucket lists solo post-pandemic

Image
Call it a fallout of social distancing or too much time spent with family, but when it comes to travel, solo trips are suddenly gaining popularity. Solo travel is typically associated with flexibility, and group tours are seen as rigid. That’s why many prefer travelling solo as it helps them meet new people and open their minds to unique experiences that inspire and enrich them. Says Daniel D’Souza, president & country head, holidays, SOTC Travel,  “With the pandemic putting a hard stop on travel, people utilised this time to build their bucket lists that mainly comprised unusual destinations away from crowds and mainstream tourist destinations. Rugged holidays like bike trips over extended weekend holidays and in-depth exploration of domestic locales have made solo travel a segment that comprises explorers and adventure enthusiasts, making them a niche but important set of customers for us. This segment prefers unusual and non-standard itineraries that give them the thrill and ad

Melbourne musings: What’s hot & happening in this beautiful Australian city

I like visiting cities that begin with the letter ‘M’ because they then alliterate so beautifully with ‘musings’. That said, even if Melbourne were spelt with a silent ‘X’ in front, I am sure I’d find some way to make it sound poetically enchanting. I love how Europe has great food and I always wish there was a way to match it with Asian hospitality. Add to that some North American sense of ease of living and you have quite the ideal place and people. To me, Australia has just that right mix. As the pandemic somewhat lifts, I got a chance to travel and recently visited Victoria (no, that alliteration was completely unintended) and I had an absolute whale of a time. I took cars, trains, and ferries and yet, at any point, was no further than a few hours from Melbourne. The state of Victoria is relatively cool, so the wines yield us some really crisp sparkling and white wines and fruit-forward reds. Minimum 10-15% increase in airfares must due to ATF price increase, rupee slide: SpiceJet CMD

The sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and the depreciation of the rupee have left the domestic airlines with no choice but to immediately raise airfares, said Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet, on Thursday. A minimum 10-15 per cent increase in air fares is required to ensure that cost of operations are better sustained, Singh said in a statement. “ATF prices have increased by more than 120 per cent since June 2021. This massive increase is not sustainable and governments, central and state, need to take urgent action to reduce taxes on ATF that are amongst the highest in the world,” he said. SpiceJet has in the last few months tried to absorb as much burden of this fuel price rise, which constitutes more than 50 per cent of our operational cost, as we could, he said. “The weakening of the Indian rupee against the US dollar further significantly impacts airlines as our substantial cost is either dollar denominated or pegged to the dollar.” from

The site also includes a museum with interactive exhibits. The corporation wants to replicate the project in Maharashtra and has already floated a tender for a consultant to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a detailed master plan. The consultant will also identify locations for the proposed sculptures to come up. The project, corporation officials told  The Indian Express , aspired to develop a memorial for leaders and warriors of Indian history, with a special emphasis on heroes from Maharashtra. The consultant will also evolve an optimal structure for the final projects and assess the financi

These are liable only in cases where the traveller is holding a valid ticket and has presented it on time, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The aviation regulator reiterated the existing rules, even as it fined Air India Rs 10 lakh for not adhering to the norm. “Our stipulations on the subject are in sync with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and similar regulations are followed globally to accord appropriate respect to passenger rights.
